The Salamander Room {FIAR}

For Kindergarten and 3rd grade we are making our way through Five in a Row (FIAR) volumes 2 and 3.  This week we dived into volume 3 with "The Salamander Room".

Connor loved this book and the imaginative way the boy dreams up a habitat for his salamander.  Emma on the other hand is our more serious kid and was not amused there were so much nature in the bedroom.

This week we learned the differences between amphibians and reptiles since salamanders look like lizards but are not reptiles.

We learned about habitats and butterflies with Crinkleroot.  Again Emma wasn't amused.  She didn't care for the name "Crinkleroot" nor his beard and he "talked to much".  ha!  Oh Emma.   Connor loved the books.

We learned how to care for salamanders with the help of a library book.  (and I learned it is not a good idea to check that book out unless you fully intend to give your child a pet salamander).

We ended the week with another field trip to the conservation area, but this time we went to Hilton Falls, because I learned it is home to the endangered Jefferson Salamander.

We were very lucky to see a couple extremely rare salamanders soon after arriving.

The boys took off at top speed and role played for quite a while.

Not too long into our 3 km hike it began to downpour.  Luckily we came somewhat prepared and carried on.

We managed to correctly navigate ourselves all the way to the falls, and it was wonderful - and the rain even eased up for a little while, giving us time to enjoy the view and have a snack.

On the way back we tried to find a salamander, but had no luck.  It was growing dark, fast, because of the rain clouds and forest canopy, and with 3 kids in tow we didn't want to linger too long.  Connor was very upset we didn't find any but we made promises to come back again and try when it's not so risky (dark).

We couldn't really walk leisurely on the way back so we played a game of "don't run, your muscles will get bigger than mine!" to which Emma replied by running the entire distance back to our van.  (It was much lighter out of the forest of course).  When we got out of the forest  we seen a nice view of Mount Nemo which we visited not to long ago.

And that concludes our "row" of Salamander Room!
